Larynx organ preservation in subjects with hypopharynx-larynx cancer

چکیده
Background Till not many years ago, the recommended treatment for advanced laryngeal cancer was a total laryngectomy followed by adjuvant radiation therapy. Studies conducted from 1980’s have broadened the therapeutic options, in the attempt to cure the cancer while sparing laryngeal functions. Functional surgery and a combination of chemotherapy (CT) and radiotherapy (RT) appears to be able to reach these objectives. We analyzed the case series of patients with laryngeal-hypopharyngeal cancer observed in the period 1999-2006 to evaluate the results on the basis of the treatment offered, focusing in particular on advanced-stage cancer.

Treatment of Advanced Carcinoma of the Larynx and Hypopharynx with Laser Followed by External Radiotherapy
Introduction: Radical laryngeal surgeries for extensive laryngeal and hypopharyngeal tumors often require a permanent tracheostomy, which has an immense impact on the quality of life of patients. A minimally invasive technique such as transoral laser microresection (TLM) followed by radiotherapy can preserve the functions of the voice and swallowing. The aim of this study is to evaluate the ro...

Chemotherapy has often been combined with radiotherapy and/or surgery in the treatment of patients with advanced head and neck cancer in an attempt to improve locoregional control, decrease distant metastasis, and increase survival. Recently, induction chemotherapy has been used in the selection of patients with advanced resectable carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx for organ preservation....
متن کاملLarynx Organ Preservation in Patients with Hypopharyngeal-Laryngeal Cancer
Object: The therapeutic options for advanced laryngeal-hypopharyngeal cancer have broadened in the last decades, in the attempt to cure the cancer sparing laryngeal functions and to improve quality of life (functional surgery, chemoradiotherapy, combined therapy). Methods: We propose a single-centre based retrospective study on the results of the treatment of larynx-hypopharynx cancer on the ba...
متن کاملPersistent Tracheostomy after Organ Preservation Protocol in Patients Treated for Larynx and Hypopharynx Cancer
Squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx is currently the second most common malignancy of the airway after lung cancer,1 and hypopharyngeal cancer accounts for fewer than 5% of head and neck cancers.2 Different treatment options exist, and they can be surgical or nonsurgical, such as radiotherapy (RT) or chemoradiotherapy (CRT). In advanced stages of the disease, the treatment strategy has evolve...
